Wedding Photography is my forte. I love to capture shots that describe themselves so vividly that I don’t have to convince my clients at all. My pictures speak out loud for themselves. As I have gained experience over the years, so has my photography transformed each day little by little. I believe that my choice of lenses has had a great role in this evolution from an amateur photographer to a professional. When you get hold of the lenses, you will start feeling a connection with the pictures; as if everything is synchronizing.
As a Professional Wedding Photographer, I feel chuffed to share my views on Best lenses for Wedding Photography and which lens should you choose?
If you are a Nikon shooter and looking forward to add a new lens to your kit, the list is pretty huge. Some of my favorite Nikon lenses are:
For better performance in low light, I would recommend Nikon 85mm f/1.4 It creates stunning bridal portraits and group shots. It has amazing contrast and achieves an astonishing depth of field. I would say that this lens is bokehlicious. It is one of the sharpest mid-range primes released by Nikon. Just perfect to capture the creamy buttery skin tone of the Bride. How else can you impress the couple?
There is an old saying, ‘If you can’t do it with 50mm, you can’t do it at all’. Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is a classic and phenomenal focal lens. This is a versatile lens that captures crystal clear and high-quality shots even at low light conditions. Indian weddings have a ton of ceremonies during night-time with dim light settings like Jaimala(Garland exchange), in such situations this lens works wonders. If I was allowed to have just one lens, this would be the one.
One unique and great zoom lens is Nikon 24mm-70mm f/2.8. It is easy to get hold off. During a wedding you have to take headshots and also group shots, this one can do it all. It is perfect for wide angle, is robust and works outstanding in low light too. This lens will make you feel that you don’t require any other lens.
For wide range capture, nothing works better than Nikon 70mm-200mm f/2.8 This is a dream lens that many photographers want to own and tame. The great thing about 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses is that one can control framing and composition without moving too close to the subjects, which can come in handy when photographing wedding ceremonies, engagements, and receptions. It is chosen by many professionals as it has great range, amazing speed and offers full-length close-up. It has amazing bokeh and fantastic sharpness. In situations when the couple is surrounded by lots of people and you are quite far, this lens will seem like a boon as you can still capture stylish pictures of them.
Always remember to capture detailed shots of the ornaments like a wedding ring, jhumka, mang tikka, intricate detailing in the bridal lehenga or sherwani, bouquets and other decorations, with Nikon 105mmf/1.4 as it is a stunning sharp lens that gives way to crisp micro details. It has internal focusing and is less bulky. It is quick so you will never miss an important shot. Moreover, it is so silent that the couple and the crowd would not even feel that they are being captured. It has pleasing bokeh and shows minimum color fringing.
If you want to capture the context of what is happening in the moment, go for Nikon 35mm f/1.4 as it offers a wider perspective. It is more versatile than 50mm if used properly. It is less distorted and offer far more straight lines at the edge. It offers more things in focus. This lens is perfect when you want to showcase a bit more of the surroundings. This lens basically captures what the eye naturally sees, from periphery to periphery. Thus it is ideal lens to shoot couple’s portrait and landscape pictures of the wedding venue.
Unlike other lenses that distort edges, Nikon super wide 14mm-24mm f/2.8 keeps the lines straight and is best for wide field view. This exotic looking lens stimulates incredible sharpness not only in the center but right to the edges and avoids camera shake. With this, you can click successive images and never miss a moment, so best for capturing candid moments of the couple. It is stunner of a lens and a perfect example of how wide angle zoom should perform.
Few other lenses besides Nikon are-
One unique and great zoom lens is Canon 24mm-70mm f/2.8. It is easy to get hold off. During a wedding you have to take headshots and also group shots, this one can do it all. It is perfect for wide angle, is robust and works outstanding in low light too. This lens is perfect and critical in smaller space. If you are shooting a ceremony in a temple, church or smaller halls, this lens is your go to.
Sigma 135mm f/1.8 has amazing contrast and high resolution and is by far the sharpest camera lens. This lens is quick, has instant and fast auto-focus and is quiet too. It is popular lens as it offers enough distance to avoid distortion but still seems not very far. It is a classic lens for portrait and any subject. It gives a look and feel to the background which is very important in wedding photography.
During a wedding, a lot is going on. So you must always have two different cameras and lenses ready at all times. You can choose a combination of any of the two above mentioned lenses as per your choice and budget.
Wedding lenses seem a bit expensive but after a while you will notice that every shot pays off. As wedding photography is at its peak so you have to impress your clients with your best shots. The above-mentioned lenses make sure that the job to impress the couple is done. These few lenses will never disappoint you or the couple. As a professional photographer you must opt a lens that itself means business.
